Make sure your technology is up to the task at hand
When you are working from, you are dependent on technology being suitable for the task at hand. You may think there is no problem in watching your favourite films or catching up with friends. However, is this adequate when you are working from home?
If you need to undertake live video conferences and send important, and perhaps sizable documents, it is crucial you have technology in place that gets results. You need to make sure you test broadband, devices and software before you commit to connecting with others.
If you need help, be sure to ask
This is an extremely challenging situation, and a lot of people will feel under pressure. If you are having problems with working from home or in using certain software or devices, ask for help. If you are unsure of who can help you, ask colleagues or the HR department for guidance.
In many cases, there will be a simple solution to the problem. Asking for help ensures you can continue as normally as possible, and it ensures you don’t get in trouble later for not flagging up a problem when you should have.
Get in the right frame of mind for remote working
The idea of working from your bed, in your pyjamas, is a comforting one for many people. However, this isn’t how remote working works for the vast majority of people. You will be better served by getting up, and preparing yourself for the day.
Unless the role requires it, you don’t need to wear your standard workwear, but you should get changed from your pyjamas. Comfortable clothing is helpful though, so try to find a medium ground between pyjamas and standard work uniform.
You should also consider the following tips when remote working:
- Develop a routine and stick to it
- Have a space that is just for work
- Try to create and maintain a work life balance
- Arrange regular breaks and walk away from your workstation
- Arrange an online catchup with colleagues
- When you stop working for the day or week, give yourself a proper break
